Suzie Q & Toby J Interview

Posted: Jul 31 2011

We caught up with the everyone's favourite pole dancing couple, Suzie Q & Toby J during their UK Tour...

1. How did you first get interested in pole dancing and what made you become an instructor/performer?
Suzie: I started about eleven years ago, working in Gentleman’s Clubs. I became one of Bobbi’s instructors when she opened her school (which was the first designated pole school in Australia). I was lucky to be involved pretty much right from the start as it took off as a stand alone sport/art form. About four years ago I opened my own pole school in Sydney “Suzie Q Pole Studio” – www.suzieqpolestudio.com.au

Toby: Suzie and I were performing double trapeze together. I started showing her some acro moves, she showed me some pole moves and thus our style of “Acro-pole” was born!

2.  What is it about pole dancing that you enjoy the most?
Performing! We really love being able to perform together. Doing a good show, where the audience is really into what you’re doing gives you this massive buzz – being able to share that buzz with your partner is one of the best feelings in the world!

3. What are your 3 favourite pole moves and why?
SQ: I love doubles, because it is so new in the industry. It’s like every time we jam we come up with completely new and unique moves.

TJ: I agree, but I also love the Iron X. It fits in with my “flags of the world” series and it’s a great one to pull off on street signs... Or statues outside Buckingham Palace.

4. What are the main fitness benefits of pole dancing and how has pole dancing improved your fitness, strength or body shape?
We have found muscles we never knew existed! We both love pole because it provides a full body workout and is heaps of fun!

5. Pole performers are athletes like in any other sport. What is an average day’s training for you?
We mix the week up with teaching classes, rehearsing and performing pole and aerial shows. We also do aerial and circus conditioning a couple of times a week.

6. If someone has never tried pole dancing before how to they get started?

It is really important to find a professional instructor to show you the basics and ensure you learn correct techniques - pole can be dangerous! Ask around and read some online reviews of schools, instructors and DVD's. The Pole Dance Community (www.poledancecommunity.co.uk) has a list of schools that have appropriately qualififed instructors with correct insurances.

7. What’s next for you in the coming year?
We are definitely going to try and get and do Australia’s Got Talent again (we chose to head to the UK instead of sticking around for the finals in Australia). We’ve also got a couple of new shows that we’re working on – we are looking forward to busting them out in front of people for the first time! You can keep track of our upcoming tours and shows here: www.suzieq.com.au or look up “The Adventures of Suzie Q and Toby J” on YouTube.
